Back to School Night was very informative, it was so great to meet all the teachers, and it also gave our students (and Student Council) an opportunity to be entrepreneurs by selling their Spirit Wear!
Thursday, August 30th from 5:00-7:00pm!
Come meet your child's teachers and learn more about their curriculum for the upcoming year. Make sure to stop by the MPA table and make your Annual Giving Fund contribution to get a cool HGM hat and to be entered in the Giving Fund Raffle. Student Council will be set up nearby selling Spirit Wear. SAVE THE DATE!! The Magnet Kick Off meeting will be on Thursday, September 6th from 6:00-7:30 PM. Details to follow. The PSAT is scheduled for Wednesday, October 10, 2018 from 8:15am to 12:28pm in Portola’s MPR, this includes 2 hours and 10 minutes for the test, and extra time for filling out forms. The cost is $16. Eighth graders can register for the test from now until September 7th. Sixth and Seventh graders can join the waitlist and will only be able to register in waitlist order after September 3 (until September 7), based on the limited number of seats available. Please note that last year the available tests sold out early. If you’re interested, register at the Student Store soon!
The PSAT/NMSQT (PSAT) is a chance for students to practice test taking skills and practice taking the high stakes SAT. Students who take this test will get a firsthand experience of what is expected from them for the SAT, and will also be given useful feedback to help them do better on the actual SAT. Students will be able to take the PSAT again in high school before taking the SAT, and can compare their scores to see their improvement before the official SAT. The PSAT follows the same format as the SAT, but is shorter by an hour and a half. Students who take the PSAT will receive a paper copy of how to read their scores as well as an online score report which includes projected SAT score ranges, state percentiles, and the power to sort answer explanations, a customized SAT study plan, a full-length SAT practice test and a personalized list of colleges, majors, and careers that may be researched using MyRoad, an online college and career planning feature. After taking the test, students will begin to receive information from colleges. There is also a feature to allow consideration for college scholarships, though it is for high school juniors. https://www.portolams.org/apps/news/show_news.jsp… Need help getting registered on Schoology? Parents, this Thursday, at your convenience, from 7:30am – 4:30 pm, please come to Portola and staff will assist you in creating your PassPort and Schoology Accounts. Stay connected with your child’s education, see assignments, track their grades, and communicate with your child’s teacher. District and school staff will be available to help you get your account set up.
