The Magnet Parents Association

The Portola Magnet Parents Association (MPA) is a 501(c)3 charitable organization founded and run by parent volunteers that is 100% dedicated to assisting, supporting and enhancing the academic program for the students and teachers at HGM. It was founded by Portola Highly Gifted Magnet families to support the program with both monetary donations and volunteer assistance. All families with children enrolled in the program are automatically members. MPA’s most important fundraising campaign, our Annual Giving Fund directly funds:

• a full-time aide / magnet coordinator who runs the HGM program at Portola

• day field trips to cultural and academic institutions around Los Angeles 

• academic competitions such as Math Counts, Battle of the Books, History Day LA, Spelling Bee 

• science materials and supplies & support for science fairs

• high school-level books, literature books and Common Core materials 

• funding for classroom materials and teacher professional development
